Who’s who in ‘Christmas Carol & the Defenders of Claus’
Twelve-year-old Carol is what you might call a Christmas fanatic. She covers her room in holiday decorations, her favorite colors are red and green, she dreams of one day meeting the Big Guy (the real Kris Kringle, not one of those mall Santas), and naturally, she LOVES getting presents. (Giving them is pretty cool, too.) Little does she know there’s a mysterious reason behind this obsession with Christmas. Carol’s about to discover that she has special powers and was destined to be a Defender of Claus. A crazy incident with a reindeer at the annual Hillsboro Holiday Festival leads to the adventure of a lifetime and changes Carol’s life forever.
Or Uncle Chris, as Carol likes to call him — probably because she knows he doesn’t like it. Uncle Christopher is a Scrooge, which is pretty ironic since he owns the International Toy Company. Carol lives with him because her father mysteriously vanished when she was 5 years old and her mother died a year later. He’s definitely not the warm and fuzzy type, but he did take Carol in when she had nowhere else to go. She loves him. After all, he’s the only family she’s got.
Amelia is Carol’s best friend. She’s a native of the Dominican Republic and came to the United States with her mother and two brothers when she was 6 years old. Her father is still back in the Dominican Republic and she misses him desperately. That’s something she and Carol share: missing their Dads. Amelia attends fancy-schmancy Broward Academy with Carol, only Amelia goes there on scholarship because she’s super smart. She tolerates Carol’s Christmas obsession and tries to keep Carol from making herself too big a target for the Broward bullies.
Mr. Winters is Carol and Amelia’s new teacher at Broward, and he’s incredibly weird! He calls all the girls m’lady and all the boys m’lord, he sits UNDER his desk and reads until his students arrive, and he flits around the classroom, waving his arms dramatically as he teaches. But Carol and Amelia are fascinated by him, and with Mr. Winter’s help, they get to take an amazing trip to New York City with Uncle Christopher to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. And Carol soon discovers that there is more to Mr. Winters than he lets on.
THE ANCIENT ONE
Noelle is a mysterious old elf in the North Pole who carries a secret that surprises everyone.
Carol’s father vanished when she was only 5 years old, and she has only vague memories of him. Is her Dad gone forever or is he the missing Defender who Carol, Santa and the Defenders go on a mission to rescue?
You don’t really need me to tell you who these two are, do you? Just know that they are as wonderful as you always imagined them to be.
